Description

A China-linked threat actor deployed autonomous AI agents to conduct cyber intrusions targeting multiple government entities and critical sectors across Asia. The campaign infrastructure was discovered on an exposed VPS hosting over 150 active campaign files without authentication. Investigations revealed 66 active intrusion projects, with 48 achieving session-level access and 6 escalating to root or SYSTEM privileges. Notable targets include the Vietnam Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Public Security, Taiwan Legislative Yuan, Indonesia State Intelligence Agency, India CDAC, as well as airlines, payment systems, and retail sectors across Asia.

During routine threat actor infrastructure hunting, I identified a suspicious APAC-hosted VPS running an autonomous AI intrusion platform with its entire working directory exposed to the open internet on port 9000. No authentication. 150+ live campaign files sitting there.

I published my initial findings. Then vulnonhq took it further.

Grateful to vulnonhq for the credit in their report and for doing the hard work of proper evidence collection and victim notification. This is what collaborative research looks like.

Routine infrastructure hunting surfaces things like this more often than people think.

My report: http://them3gatron.github.io

Vulnonhq obtained access to the server, pulled 16.4 GB of evidence including recovered deleted container layers, and mapped the full scope of the campaign.

Their findings:

66 active intrusion projects. 48 reached some level of access. 6 reached root or SYSTEM level.

The target list is what makes this significant.

Vulnonhq identified:

Vietnam Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Public Security. Taiwan Legislative Yuan. Indonesia State Intelligence Agency. India CDAC.

Plus airlines, payments, and retail across Asia. 48 of 66 operations reached at least session-level access.

Technical Analysis

During routine threat infrastructure hunting, a VPS hosted in the Asia-Pacific region was found exposing an autonomous AI intrusion platform with no authentication, containing over 150 live campaign files. Subsequent analysis by vulnonhq recovered extensive evidence and mapped 66 active intrusion projects linked to a China-affiliated operator. Of these, 48 operations achieved some level of access, and 6 escalated privileges to root or SYSTEM level. The campaign targeted high-profile government agencies in Vietnam, Taiwan, Indonesia, and India, alongside commercial sectors such as airlines, payments, and retail across Asia. This represents a sophisticated use of AI-driven automation in cyber espionage and intrusion campaigns.

Potential Impact

The campaign resulted in unauthorized access to sensitive government and commercial networks across multiple Asian countries, with several intrusions achieving elevated privileges. This compromises confidentiality, integrity, and potentially availability of targeted systems, posing significant risks to national security and critical infrastructure. The use of autonomous AI agents suggests a high level of operational sophistication and persistence.

Defensive Guidance

No specific remediation or patch is applicable as this is an active threat campaign rather than a software vulnerability. Organizations in the affected sectors should review their network exposure, especially services accessible without authentication, and enhance monitoring for unauthorized access. Collaboration with threat intelligence providers and incident response teams is recommended to identify and mitigate ongoing intrusions. The vendor or operator of the exposed infrastructure is not applicable; mitigation relies on defensive security controls and threat hunting.
