Description

A data race vulnerability exists in the RDMA transport of Apache bRPC versions prior to 1.18.0. This flaw allows a remote, unauthenticated client to cause a denial of service by crashing the server process when RDMA support is enabled both at build time and runtime. The issue arises from unsynchronized access to shared input buffers and parser state between TCP and RDMA message processing during the handshake and subsequent communication.

Technical Analysis

Apache bRPC versions before 1.18.0 contain a data race in the RDMA transport implementation. When RDMA is enabled, the server processes input from both the TCP file descriptor and the RDMA queue pair concurrently without proper synchronization. This leads to corruption of shared buffers and parser state, allowing a remote client that has completed the RDMA handshake to send data that crashes the server process. The vulnerability affects deployments using RDMA-enabled bRPC servers accepting connections from untrusted clients. The issue is tracked as CWE-362 (Race Condition).

Potential Impact

A remote, unauthenticated attacker can cause a denial of service by crashing the bRPC server process. This impacts availability but does not indicate confidentiality or integrity compromise based on the provided data.

Mitigation Recommendations

Two remediation options are available: 1) Upgrade Apache bRPC to version 1.18.0 or later, which includes a fix for this vulnerability. 2) Apply the patch available at https://github.com/apache/brpc/pull/3505. Deployments not using RDMA support are not affected and do not require action.
