Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-48936 is a vulnerability in the Node.js Permission API that permits starting a local server through a Unix domain socket without requiring the --allow-net permission. This bypass of expected permission restrictions could allow limited unauthorized local network operations. The flaw affects Node.js version 26.3.0 and specific Ubuntu package versions listed. The issue was addressed and fixed in Node.js version 26.3.1.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows a local attacker with limited permissions to start a local server via a Unix domain socket without the --allow-net permission. This could lead to unintended local network service exposure or interference. The CVSS score is 3.3 (low to medium severity), indicating limited impact with no confidentiality or availability impact and only low integrity impact. There are no known exploits in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in Node.js version 26.3.1. Users and administrators should upgrade affected Node.js installations to version 26.3.1 or later. For affected Ubuntu package versions, apply the corresponding security updates provided by the distribution. No additional mitigation is indicated by the vendor advisory.
