Description

A critical vulnerability (CVE-2026-96658) was found in Foreman that allows an authenticated attacker with low-level permissions to bypass the safemode sandbox in the templating engine. This flaw enables remote code execution (RCE) by improperly handling delegated methods, allowing unauthorized functions to be appended to the allowed execution list and arbitrary commands to be run on the hosting server. Red Hat has released an official security advisory and patch for Red Hat Satellite 6.19 to address this issue.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-96658 is a critical security flaw in Foreman where an authenticated user with limited permissions can bypass the safemode sandbox within the templating engine. The vulnerability arises from improper handling of delegated methods, which permits an attacker to append unauthorized functions to the allowed execution list. This leads to remote code execution on the hosting server. The issue affects Red Hat Satellite 6.19 and related components. Red Hat has issued a security advisory (RHSA-2026:74503) with patches to remediate this vulnerability.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an authenticated attacker with low-level permissions to execute arbitrary code remotely on the hosting server, potentially leading to full system compromise. The CVSS v3.1 base score is 9.9 (critical), reflecting high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

An official patch is available from Red Hat as detailed in advisory RHSA-2026:74503. Users of Red Hat Satellite 6.19 should apply the update promptly to remediate this vulnerability. No additional mitigation steps are required beyond applying the vendor-provided fix.
