Description

A vulnerability in mod_qos allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) by maintaining many concurrent low-rate connections. The flaw occurs when connection rate monitoring is enabled, and the module does not properly check array boundaries for client IP address records, leading to heap memory corruption and potential server crash.

Technical Analysis

The mod_qos module contains a flaw where, under active connection rate monitoring, it fails to verify array boundaries when recording client IP addresses. An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit this by maintaining numerous concurrent low-rate connections, causing more connection records to be added than the allocated buffer can hold. This results in heap memory corruption, which can crash the web server process, leading to a Denial of Service condition.

Potential Impact

This vulnerability allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to cause a Denial of Service by crashing the web server process through heap memory corruption. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity reported, only availability is affected.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. No official fix or patch links are provided at this time.
