Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-80048 is a vulnerability in the sssd-kcm component where a local user or process able to connect to the sssd-kcm UNIX socket can exploit the flaw by sending a large request length header and then stalling the connection. This causes the system to preallocate significant memory, leading to memory exhaustion within the sssd-kcm responder and resulting in a denial of service condition. The vulnerability affects numerous explicitly listed sssd versions. The CVSS v3.1 score is 5.5 (medium severity), with attack vector local, low attack complexity, low privileges required, no user interaction, unchanged scope, and impact limited to availability.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability causes denial of service by exhausting memory resources in the sssd-kcm responder. It does not affect confidentiality or integrity. Exploitation requires local access to the sssd-kcm UNIX socket. There are no known exploits in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict local access to the sssd-kcm UNIX socket to trusted users and processes to reduce risk of exploitation.
