Description

A vulnerability in SSSD (System Security Services Daemon) allows a local attacker with privileges to connect to the PAM responder socket to cause a denial of service. This occurs when the pam_app_services configuration is enabled and a specially crafted request omits the service item, leading to a NULL pointer dereference and crashing the PAM responder, disrupting authentication services.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-90995 is a local denial of service vulnerability in SSSD where an attacker with access to the PAM responder socket can send a crafted protocol request that omits the service item while pam_app_services is enabled. This triggers a NULL pointer dereference causing the PAM responder to crash and disrupt authentication services.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability causes denial of service by crashing the PAM responder, which can disrupt authentication services on affected systems. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity reported.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict local access to the PAM responder socket to trusted users only and consider disabling pam_app_services if feasible.
