Description

A vulnerability in SSSD occurs when configured with the LDAP access provider and ldap_access_order including ppolicy or lockout. If a user lookup returns zero results, a fail-open condition in the LDAP ppolicy access check can cause an incorrect success response and cache an allow decision. This permits continued authorization for deleted or deprovisioned users. A remote attacker with prior valid account context could exploit this to maintain access and potentially make limited modifications to resources no longer authorized.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-90462 describes a flaw in SSSD's LDAP access provider configuration when ldap_access_order includes ppolicy or lockout. If a user lookup returns zero results, the LDAP ppolicy access check may fail open, incorrectly returning success and caching an allow decision. This flaw allows a remote attacker who previously had valid account context to maintain access to information and potentially perform limited modifications to resources that should have been revoked due to user deletion or deprovisioning.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows unauthorized continued access for deleted or deprovisioned users due to a fail-open condition in LDAP ppolicy access checks. This could enable a remote attacker with prior valid credentials to maintain access and potentially make limited unauthorized changes to protected resources.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance.
