Description

A vulnerability exists in SSSD's NFS idmap plugin where an out-of-bounds write can occur when processing oversized cached user or group name entries. This flaw can be triggered locally by requesting identity lookups that exceed buffer sizes, potentially causing a denial of service by crashing the identity mapping service and possibly corrupting adjacent memory.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-104036 describes a flaw in the SSSD NFS idmap plugin. When retrieving cached user or group names, the plugin detects if an entry exceeds the destination buffer size but fails to abort before copying data, resulting in an out-of-bounds write. This vulnerability can be triggered by a local attacker requesting identity lookups that resolve to oversized cached entries. The primary impact is denial of service due to crashing the identity mapping service, with potential memory corruption of adjacent process memory.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability can cause denial of service by crashing the identity mapping service. There is also a risk of adjacent process memory corruption, which could lead to undefined behavior or further security issues. Exploitation requires local access and elevated privileges to trigger identity lookups with oversized cached entries.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. No official fix or patch links are provided in the input data. Until a patch is available, restrict local access to trusted users and monitor for unusual crashes of the identity mapping service.
