Critical
Published: 08/12/2026 (08/12/2026, 19:05:12 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Vendor/Project: Red Hat
Product: multicluster engine for Kubernetes 2.10

Description

CVE-2026-73268 is a critical code injection vulnerability in the cluster-curator-controller component of Red Hat multicluster engine for Kubernetes 2.10. A tenant with create or update permissions on ClusterCurator resources can inject arbitrary Job specifications due to insufficient validation in the CreateJob() function. Exploitation allows running injected Jobs with elevated controller privileges, leading to arbitrary code execution and privilege escalation with potential access to cluster-wide secrets.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability exists because the CreateJob() function in the cluster-curator-controller component does not validate user-controlled input when unmarshaling the spec.install.overrideJob raw extension. This flaw enables a tenant with create or update permissions on ClusterCurator resources to inject arbitrary Job specifications. Successful exploitation results in the injected Job running with the controller's elevated privileges, allowing arbitrary code execution and privilege escalation, potentially exposing sensitive cluster-wide secrets.

Potential Impact

An attacker with limited permissions (create or update on ClusterCurator resources) can escalate privileges by injecting arbitrary Jobs that run with elevated controller privileges. This can lead to arbitrary code execution within the cluster and unauthorized access to sensitive cluster-wide secrets, posing a critical security risk.

Mitigation Recommendations

Red Hat has released security updates in multicluster engine for Kubernetes version 2.11.6 and later that address this vulnerability. Users should upgrade to version 2.11.6 or later to remediate this issue. Refer to the official Red Hat advisory RHSA-2026:59556 for detailed upgrade instructions. No additional mitigations are indicated by the vendor advisory.
