A heap-based buffer overflow flaw was found in rpm. (CVE-2026-95520)
Description
A heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability exists in rpm when parsing a symlink entry in an untrusted RPM package with a crafted RPMTAG_LONGFILESIZES value. This causes an integer overflow that reduces a buffer allocation to one byte, allowing attacker-controlled data to overflow the buffer. The flaw is exploitable via rpm2cpio, rpm2archive, and rpm -qlvp commands on untrusted packages.

Technical Analysis
CVE-2026-95520 describes a heap-based buffer overflow in rpm triggered by parsing a symlink entry in an untrusted RPM package whose RPMTAG_LONGFILESIZES is set to 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF. This causes an integer overflow in the iterReadArchiveNext() function, shrinking the buffer allocation to one byte. Subsequently, the payload's cpio filesize field, controlled by the attacker, writes data beyond the allocated buffer, leading to a heap overflow. This vulnerability is reachable through rpm2cpio, rpm2archive, and rpm -qlvp commands when processing untrusted packages.
Potential Impact
The vulnerability allows an attacker to write data beyond the allocated heap buffer, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution or denial of service. The CVSS score of 7.1 indicates a medium severity with high impact on integrity and availability but requires local access with low privileges and user interaction.
Mitigation Recommendations
No explicit patch or remediation details are provided in the input data. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid processing untrusted RPM packages with vulnerable rpm versions.
