Description

A heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability exists in GIMP's raw data export plug-in. This occurs when exporting very large images due to integer overflow in memory allocation calculations, causing insufficient memory allocation and potential memory corruption.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability (CVE-2026-106066) is a heap-based buffer overflow in GIMP's raw data export plug-in. It arises when exporting very large images because the calculation for memory allocation using g_malloc() overflows the product of width, height, and bytes-per-pixel. This results in allocating less memory than required, while GEGL reads or writes more data during export, leading to a buffer overflow condition.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability can lead to memory corruption during image export, potentially causing denial of service or arbitrary code execution. The CVSS score is 6.3 (medium severity) with impact on integrity and availability but no confidentiality impact. Exploitation requires local access with high attack complexity and user interaction.

Mitigation Recommendations

No patch or official fix information is currently available. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid exporting very large images using the raw data export plug-in or apply any vendor-recommended workarounds once published.
