Description

CVE-2026-59681 is an OS command injection vulnerability in the SUSE yast2-auth-client component. It arises because certain Active Directory configuration values are not validated or properly shell-quoted before being used in command execution. This allows an attacker controlling these values to execute arbitrary commands as root on the affected host.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability exists in the Auth::AuthConf module of yast2-auth-client, specifically in src/lib/auth/authconf.rb. The module constructs Samba net ads commands by interpolating unvalidated Active Directory configuration parameters such as Organizational Unit (ou), dnshostname, AD user name, and AD domain name into command strings. These strings are then executed via Ruby's Open3.popen2 or Open3.capture2, which runs the commands through /bin/sh, enabling OS command injection by an attacker who can control these configuration values.

Potential Impact

An attacker who can control Active Directory configuration values can execute arbitrary commands with root privileges on the configured host. This can lead to full system compromise, including confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts.

Mitigation Recommendations

No patch or official fix information is currently available. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict who can modify Active Directory configuration values used by yast2-auth-client and avoid using untrusted input in these configurations.
