Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in Matthias-Wandel jhead (up to version 3.3) affects the ProcessGpsInfo function within gpsinfo.c, specifically in the WebP EXIF Handler component. Manipulating the TAG_GPS_LAT or TAG_GPS_LONG arguments can cause a heap-based buffer overflow. This vulnerability requires local access to exploit and has been publicly disclosed. The project was notified early via an issue report but has not issued a fix or response. The CVSS 3.1 base score is 5.3, with attack vector local, low attack complexity, low privileges required, no user interaction, and impacts on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation can lead to a heap-based buffer overflow, potentially allowing an attacker with local access to cause memory corruption. This may result in partial loss of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected system. However, the attack requires local privileges and does not involve user interaction.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official fix or patch has been released by the vendor as of the latest information. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a patch is available, restrict local access to trusted users only and monitor for any suspicious local activity related to jhead usage.
