Published: 08/28/2026 (08/28/2026, 20:26:05 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Vendor/Project: MongoDB
Product: BI Connector ODBC Driver

Description

CVE-2026-81532 is a high-severity stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability in the MongoDB BI Connector ODBC driver. It occurs when a user submits a positioned-cursor SQL statement with a cursor name longer than an internal fixed-length buffer. The driver does not properly bound the cursor name length before building its diagnostic message, leading to memory overwrite. This can cause the hosting application to crash and potentially allow execution of unintended code within the process.

Technical Analysis

The MongoDB BI Connector ODBC driver contains a stack-based buffer overflow (CWE-121) triggered by a positioned-cursor statement with an excessively long cursor name. The vulnerability arises because the driver fails to check the length of the cursor name before copying it into a fixed-size buffer used in diagnostic messages. This memory corruption can terminate the hosting application and may enable code execution within its context. The CVSS v3.1 base score is 8.7, indicating high severity. No patch or official fix information is provided in the available data.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation can cause the hosting application process to terminate unexpectedly and may allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code within the context of that process. This could lead to denial of service or potential privilege escalation depending on the hosting environment and application privileges.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid submitting positioned-cursor statements with untrusted or excessively long cursor names through the MongoDB BI Connector ODBC driver. Monitor vendor communications for updates on patches or official mitigations.
