Description

A stack overflow vulnerability exists in Simcenter Nastran versions prior to V2606. This flaw occurs when the application parses specially crafted strings as arguments to one of its binaries. Successful exploitation could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code within the context of the affected process. The vulnerability has a high severity rating with a CVSS score of 7.8. No official patch or remediation information is currently provided.

Technical Analysis

Simcenter Nastran contains a stack overflow vulnerability (CWE-121) triggered by parsing specially crafted string arguments in one of its binaries. This vulnerability affects all versions before V2606. Exploitation could lead to arbitrary code execution in the context of the current process. The CVSS v3.1 base score is 7.8, indicating high severity, with attack vector local, low attack complexity, no privileges required, user interaction required, and high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. There is no indication of known exploits in the wild or vendor-provided patches at this time.

Potential Impact

An attacker who can supply specially crafted string arguments locally to the vulnerable Simcenter Nastran binary may trigger a stack overflow, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the current user. This could compromise confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected system or data processed by the application.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, avoid running untrusted input through the vulnerable application binaries and restrict local access to trusted users only.
