Description

A vulnerability in Cisco NX-OS Software allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to exhaust system resources by sending a high rate of UDP or TCP connections to a data plane interface. This causes temporary disruptions and packet loss affecting routing and control plane protocols, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition that clears automatically once the traffic subsides.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-20173 describes a resource exhaustion vulnerability in Cisco NX-OS Software due to improper rate limiting on certain protocols. An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this by flooding a data plane interface with high-rate UDP or TCP connections, causing instability and packet loss in routing and control plane protocols. The resulting denial of service condition is temporary and resolves without manual intervention after the attack traffic stops.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability can cause temporary denial of service by destabilizing routing and control plane protocols through packet loss and resource exhaustion. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity. The DoS condition clears automatically after the attack traffic ceases.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. No official fix or patch information is provided at this time.
