Description

CVE-2026-20339 is a high-severity vulnerability in the PESpin file format parser of ClamAV. It allows an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial-of-service (DoS) condition by exploiting improper boundary checks that lead to an integer overflow during file scanning. The attacker can trigger this by submitting a crafted PESpin file to ClamAV, causing the scanning process to terminate unexpectedly.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability arises from improper boundary checks in the PESpin file format parser within ClamAV, which may result in an integer overflow. An attacker can exploit this by submitting a specially crafted PESpin file to be scanned, leading to memory corruption and causing the ClamAV scanning process to terminate, resulting in a denial-of-service condition. The vulnerability does not require authentication and can be triggered remotely. There is no information about other impacts beyond DoS. The CVSS 3.1 base score is 7.5, indicating high severity with network attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges required, no user interaction, and impact limited to availability.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation causes the ClamAV scanning process to terminate, resulting in a denial-of-service condition. There is no confirmed impact on confidentiality or integrity. No known exploits are reported in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid scanning untrusted PESpin files or implement additional file validation controls if possible.
