Description

CVE-2026-82587 is a medium severity memory corruption vulnerability in Open5GS versions 2.7.0 through 2.7.7. It affects the AMF component's function amf_namf_comm_decode_ue_mm_context_list, where manipulation of the ueContext.mmContextList[*].allowedNssai argument can cause memory corruption. The vulnerability can be exploited remotely without user interaction or elevated privileges. A patch is available in Open5GS version 2.8.0 to resolve this issue.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability in Open5GS up to version 2.7.7 involves memory corruption triggered by improper handling of the ueContext.mmContextList[*].allowedNssai argument in the amf_namf_comm_decode_ue_mm_context_list function within the AMF component. The flaw allows a remote attacker to cause memory corruption, potentially leading to undefined behavior. The issue is tracked as CVE-2026-82587 and is classified under CWE-119 (Improper Restriction of Operations within the Bounds of a Memory Buffer). The vulnerability has been publicly disclosed, and a patch is available in version 2.8.0.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation can cause memory corruption in the AMF component of Open5GS, which may lead to application instability or crashes. The vulnerability can be triggered remotely without requiring user interaction or elevated privileges. There are no confirmed reports of active exploitation in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade Open5GS to version 2.8.0 or later, where this vulnerability has been fixed. Applying this official patch fully mitigates the issue. No additional mitigations are specified or required by the vendor.
