Description

An Akira ransomware affiliate compromised a system via an exposed SonicWall VPN without MFA, then disabled endpoint detection and response (EDR) by rebooting the machine into Safe Mode with Networking. This allowed the attacker to steal data and credentials over several hours while EDR and antivirus protections were effectively disabled. The attacker added AnyDesk remote access to Safe Mode to maintain persistence. However, the ransomware payload failed to execute due to system errors in Safe Mode, preventing file encryption.
