Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-47084 affects cyrus-imapd in Cyrus IMAP versions up to and including 3.12.2. The flaw is that the LOCALDELETE IMAP command does not enforce Access Control List (ACL) checks properly. As a result, an authenticated user without administrative privileges can execute this command to delete mailboxes they are not authorized to manage. This bypass of ACL restrictions compromises mailbox integrity by allowing unauthorized mailbox deletions.

Potential Impact

An authenticated but non-admin user can delete mailboxes for which they lack permissions, potentially causing data loss or disruption of email services. There is no indication of confidentiality or availability impact beyond mailbox deletion. The vulnerability does not require user interaction and has low attack complexity.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict access to the IMAP service to trusted users only and monitor for suspicious LOCALDELETE command usage. Avoid granting unnecessary IMAP privileges to non-admin users.
