Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-26899 describes a command injection vulnerability in luci-app-https-dns-proxy on OpenWrt PR #15 prior to 2026-01-17. The flaw is in the setInitAction function located at /usr/libexec/rpcd/luci.https-dns-proxy, where insufficient sanitization of the name parameter allows authenticated users to inject shell metacharacters and execute arbitrary shell commands. This vulnerability is classified under CWE-78 (Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an OS Command).

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an authenticated user to execute arbitrary shell commands with the privileges of the affected service, potentially leading to full system compromise, data loss, or service disruption. The CVSS 3.1 score is 8.8 (High), reflecting network attack vector, low attack complexity, required privileges, no user interaction, and high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or remediation guidance is currently provided. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance.
