Angular.js: The Angular Language Service VS Code Extension provides a rich editing experience for Angular templates. (CVE-2026-50178)
Description
The Angular Language Service VS Code Extension had a vulnerability where it trusted rendered Markdown content in tooltips without properly sanitizing JSDoc strings. This allowed attackers to embed malicious command links in JSDoc comments that, when hovered over and clicked by a developer, could execute commands on the developer's machine. This issue was fixed in version 21.2.4.

Technical Analysis
The Angular Language Service VS Code Extension configured the tooltip Markdown renderer with isTrusted: true, enabling active elements like command: URIs. However, the Angular Language Server did not escape or sanitize brackets, raw links, and control characters from JSDoc strings before forwarding hover Markdown content. An attacker could craft malicious JSDoc tooltips containing active command links in project files or dependencies. When a developer hovered over the affected symbol and clicked the link, the IDE executed the command on the host machine. This vulnerability affects versions prior to 21.2.4 and has been fixed in 21.2.4.
Potential Impact
Successful exploitation allows an attacker to execute arbitrary commands on the developer's host machine via the VS Code IDE by tricking the developer into clicking a malicious tooltip link. This can lead to full compromise of the developer environment, including confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts.
Mitigation Recommendations
Upgrade the Angular Language Service VS Code Extension to version 21.2.4 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. Until then, avoid opening untrusted projects or dependencies that may contain malicious JSDoc comments. No other vendor advisory mitigation is provided.
