Until a fix is available, applications should consider limiting the size and complexity of ASN.1 input data, especially the number of constructed BIT STRING fragments, to reduce risk of CPU exhaustion. Avoid decoding untrusted ASN.1 data without proper input validation or resource limits.

Description

A vulnerability in pyasn1 through version 0.6.4 causes quadratic CPU consumption when decoding constructed BIT STRING values with many fragments. This can lead to CPU exhaustion and denial of service if an application decodes attacker-controlled ASN.1 data without proper input limits. The issue affects BER and CER decoders and certain schema-driven DER decoding paths. No confidentiality or integrity impact is reported. The vulnerability has a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.5, indicating high severity.
