Description

Vikunja versions up to 2.5.0 expose the raw TOTP shared secret after enrollment via specific API endpoints without requiring re-authentication. This allows attackers with a valid access token to retrieve the secret and generate valid two-factor authentication codes indefinitely, potentially leading to account takeover. The vulnerability has a medium severity with a CVSS score of 4.3.

Technical Analysis

Vikunja before version 2.6.0 has a vulnerability where the raw TOTP shared secret remains accessible after enrollment through the GET /api/v1/user/settings/totp and /api/v1/user/settings/totp/qrcode endpoints without requiring step-up authentication. An attacker possessing a valid access token can retrieve this secret, import it into their own authenticator app, and generate valid TOTP codes indefinitely, bypassing the second factor of authentication and enabling account takeover.

Potential Impact

An attacker with a valid access token can read the TOTP shared secret and generate valid two-factor authentication codes indefinitely. This undermines the second factor of authentication, increasing the risk of unauthorized account access and potential account takeover.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Users should verify if an official fix is available in Vikunja version 2.6.0 or later and upgrade accordingly. Until then, restrict access tokens and monitor for unauthorized access.
