Asymmetric resource consumption (amplification) vulnerability in Apache Struts. (CVE-2026-104712)
Description
An asymmetric resource consumption (amplification) vulnerability exists in Apache Struts that allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to exhaust server CPU and outbound network capacity by sending low-volume requests. This occurs when a request parameter is bound to a BigDecimal property and rendered through the Struts tag library, producing a disproportionately large response. The vulnerability affects specific versions of Apache Struts and is fixed in versions 6.12.0 and 7.4.0.

Technical Analysis
CVE-2026-104712 is an asymmetric resource consumption vulnerability in Apache Struts. When a request parameter is bound to a java.math.BigDecimal property and rendered via the Struts tag library, the response size can be amplified many orders of magnitude beyond the request size. This allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to exhaust server CPU and outbound network bandwidth with sustained low-volume traffic. The vulnerability affects Apache Struts versions from 2.5.14 through 2.5.33, 6.0.0 through 6.11.0, and 7.0.0 through 7.3.0. Applications that do not bind request parameters to BigDecimal properties or do not render such properties through the Struts tag library are not affected. The issue is fixed in versions 6.12.0 and 7.4.0.
Potential Impact
An unauthenticated remote attacker can cause a denial of service by exhausting server CPU and outbound network capacity through amplified responses generated by the vulnerable Apache Struts versions. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity, but availability is severely affected.
Mitigation Recommendations
Users should upgrade affected Apache Struts versions to 6.12.0 or 7.4.0, where this vulnerability is fixed. There is no indication that temporary mitigations or workarounds are available. Patch status is confirmed by the vendor advisory recommending these upgrade versions.
