Description

Bytebase versions before 3.16.0 have an authorization bypass vulnerability in the UpdateIssueComment handler. This flaw allows users with low privileges, including Project Viewers, to modify comments in projects they do not have access to by supplying a foreign comment UID. Attackers can set their own project's issue as a parent and reference comments from other projects to overwrite them.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in Bytebase prior to version 3.16.0 involves an authorization bypass in the UpdateIssueComment handler. It permits any user with a project role, even minimal roles such as Project Viewer, to manipulate comments belonging to other projects by providing a foreign comment UID. This bypass allows unauthorized modification of comments across project boundaries by associating the attacker's project issue as a parent and referencing another project's comment identifier.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability enables unauthorized modification of issue comments in projects where the attacker has no legitimate access. While it does not affect confidentiality or availability, it impacts the integrity of project comments by allowing low-privileged users to overwrite comments in other projects.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in Bytebase version 3.16.0. Users should upgrade to version 3.16.0 or later to remediate this authorization bypass vulnerability.
