Technical Analysis
The Colanode server up to version 0.4.7 contains a path traversal vulnerability (CWE-22) where authenticated users can supply percent-encoded '../' sequences in the avatarId parameter of the GET /client/v1/avatars/:avatarId endpoint. This allows them to escape the avatars directory and read arbitrary .jpeg files belonging to other workspaces. The vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 4.3, indicating medium severity, with network attack vector, low attack complexity, requiring privileges, no user interaction, and limited confidentiality impact.
Potential Impact
Authenticated attackers can read arbitrary .jpeg files outside the intended avatars directory, potentially exposing sensitive image data from other workspaces. There is no impact on integrity or availability reported.
Mitigation Recommendations
No patch or official fix information is currently available. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict access to authenticated users and monitor for suspicious activity related to avatarId parameter usage.
