What to do

AI-suggested

  1. Monitor official Mesa project channels and Linux distribution security advisories for patches or updates addressing CVE-2023-45931 and apply them promptly.
  2. Implement network segmentation and firewall rules to restrict access to systems running vulnerable Mesa versions, minimizing exposure to remote attacks.
  3. Employ application whitelisting and runtime protection tools to detect and prevent abnormal crashes or exploitation attempts targeting the graphics stack.
  4. For critical systems, consider temporarily disabling or limiting use of features relying on the check_xshm() function or related shared memory extensions until a patch is available.
  5. Maintain comprehensive system and application logging to detect anomalous behavior indicative of exploitation attempts.
  6. Conduct regular vulnerability assessments and penetration testing focused on graphics libraries and related components.
  7. Educate system administrators and users about the potential impact and signs of denial of service conditions related to this vulnerability.

Description

Mesa 23.0.4 was discovered to contain a NULL pointer dereference in check_xshm() for the has_error state. NOTE: this is disputed because there is no scenario in which the vulnerability was demonstrated.
