Description

The Paid Membership Plugin, Ecommerce, User Registration Form, Login Form, User Profile & Restrict Content – ProfilePress plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the plugin 'reg-number-field' shortcode in all versions up to, and including, 4.14.3 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on user supplied attributes. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers with contributor-level and above permissions to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability CVE-2024-1046 is a stored cross-site scripting (CWE-79) issue in the ProfilePress WordPress plugin, specifically in the 'reg-number-field' shortcode. It arises from improper neutralization of input during web page generation, allowing authenticated users with contributor-level or higher privileges to inject malicious scripts. These scripts are stored and executed in the context of other users viewing the affected pages. The vulnerability affects all versions up to 4.14.3. The CVSS score of 6.4 reflects a medium impact with network attack vector, low attack complexity, and no user interaction required. Confidentiality and integrity impacts are low, with no availability impact. There is no vendor advisory or patch information currently available.

Potential Impact

An authenticated attacker with contributor-level or higher permissions can inject persistent malicious scripts via the 'reg-number-field' shortcode. These scripts execute in the browsers of users who visit the injected pages, potentially leading to unauthorized actions or data exposure within the context of the affected site. The impact is limited to confidentiality and integrity with no availability impact. The vulnerability does not require user interaction to trigger once the malicious content is stored.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict contributor-level permissions to trusted users only and consider disabling or removing the 'reg-number-field' shortcode if possible. Monitor for plugin updates from properfraction and apply them promptly once released.
