Source: CVE Database V5
Product: Open5GS

Description

CVE-2024-14042 is a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability in Open5GS versions 2.7.0 and 2.7.1 affecting the Diameter S6a Interface component. The flaw occurs due to improper handling of the os.len argument in specific callback functions, allowing remote attackers to trigger the overflow. A public exploit exists. Upgrading to Open5GS version 2.7.2 mitigates this issue.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability in Open5GS up to version 2.7.1 involves a stack-based buffer overflow in the functions hss_ogs_diam_s6a_air_cb and hss_ogs_diam_s6a_ulr_cb within the src/hss/hss-s6a-path.c file. The issue arises from manipulation of the os.len argument leading to memory corruption on the stack. The vulnerability is remotely exploitable without user interaction and has a CVSS 4.0 score of 5.3 (medium severity). A patch identified by commit e89aa79efe629ae90f59dcdf8847c117d9a7da86 is available in version 2.7.2.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation can cause a stack-based buffer overflow, potentially leading to application crashes or arbitrary code execution within the context of the Open5GS process. The vulnerability is remotely exploitable without authentication or user interaction, increasing its risk. However, the CVSS score indicates medium severity with limited complexity and privileges required.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade Open5GS to version 2.7.2 or later, which contains the official patch (commit e89aa79efe629ae90f59dcdf8847c117d9a7da86) addressing this vulnerability. No other mitigations are specified. Patch status is confirmed by the vendor advisory information.
