Technical Analysis

This vulnerability exists in Open5GS up to version 2.7.1 within the mme_s6a_subscription_data_from_avp function of src/mme/mme-fd-path.c, part of the Diameter S6a Interface. Improper handling of the msisdn_len argument can lead to a heap-based buffer overflow, which can be exploited remotely. The vulnerability has a CVSS 4.0 score of 5.3 (medium severity). A patch fixing this issue was introduced in version 2.7.2, identified by commit 7ea82cb87bb65c3694d8d7c7a5efed1c4d3c9304.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could allow an attacker to cause a heap-based buffer overflow remotely, potentially leading to application crashes or other undefined behavior. The CVSS score indicates a medium severity impact with network attack vector and no user interaction required. There is no confirmed evidence of exploitation in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade Open5GS to version 2.7.2 or later, which contains the official fix for this vulnerability. No other mitigations are specified. Patch status is confirmed by the vendor through the version upgrade.
