Vendor/Project: SUSE
Product: rancher

Description

A vulnerability has been identified within Rancher where a user with the ability to create a project, on a certain cluster, can create a project with the same name as an existing project in a different cluster. This results in the user gaining access to the other project in the different cluster, resulting in a privilege escalation. This happens because the namespace used on the local cluster to store related resources (PRTBs and secrets) is the name of the project.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability arises because Rancher uses the project name as the namespace on the local cluster to store related resources such as Project Role Template Bindings (PRTBs) and secrets. A user with project creation rights can create a project with a duplicate name on a different cluster, thereby gaining unauthorized access to resources in the other project. This is an incorrect authorization issue classified under CWE-863.

Potential Impact

An attacker with limited privileges (project creation rights) can escalate their privileges by accessing projects in other clusters that share the same project name. This leads to a complete compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected projects' resources.

Mitigation Recommendations

No explicit patch or remediation details are provided in the input data. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is applied, restrict project creation permissions carefully and monitor for suspicious project creation activities.
