Technical Analysis

The InstaWP Connect – 1-click WP Staging & Migration plugin for WordPress suffers from an unrestricted file upload vulnerability (CWE-434) in the /wp-json/instawp-connect/v1/config REST API endpoint. This flaw allows unauthenticated attackers to upload arbitrary files because the plugin does not sufficiently validate uploaded file types. The vulnerability affects all versions up to 0.1.0.22 and has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 9.8, reflecting its critical severity and the potential for full system compromise.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation enables unauthenticated attackers to upload arbitrary files, which can lead to remote code execution, full site compromise, data theft, or denial of service. The vulnerability impacts confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected WordPress sites using the vulnerable plugin versions.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict access to the vulnerable REST API endpoint if possible, and consider disabling or removing the InstaWP Connect plugin. Monitor official vendor channels for updates and apply patches promptly once released.
