What to do
AI-suggested
- Immediately restrict access to the Machine-to-Machine Interface (MMI) by implementing network segmentation and firewall rules to limit HTTP POST requests to trusted management hosts only.
- Monitor network traffic for unusual or malformed HTTP POST requests targeting the python method of the MMI, using intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS) and security information and event management (SIEM) tools.
- Enforce strict role-based access controls (RBAC) to minimize the number of users with read-only access and audit their activities regularly.
- Coordinate with Extreme Networks to obtain and apply security patches as soon as they become available.
- Consider deploying additional endpoint protection on network devices that can detect anomalous privilege escalation behaviors.
- Conduct thorough post-incident investigations if suspicious activity is detected to identify and remediate potential compromises.
- Educate network administrators about this vulnerability and the importance of monitoring and access control best practices.
Description
In Extreme XOS through 22.6.1.4, a read-only user can escalate privileges to root via a crafted HTTP POST request to the python method of the Machine-to-Machine Interface (MMI).
