What to do
AI-suggested
To mitigate CVE-2024-28569, organizations should first restrict local access to systems running vulnerable versions of FreeImage, especially limiting untrusted user accounts. Employ strict access controls and monitoring to detect suspicious activity related to image processing. Use application whitelisting and endpoint detection and response (EDR) tools to identify anomalous behavior indicative of exploitation attempts. Since no official patches are currently available, consider recompiling FreeImage with additional security hardening or disabling EXR format support if not required. Regularly monitor FreeImage project updates and apply patches immediately upon release. Additionally, conduct internal audits of software dependencies to identify and isolate vulnerable FreeImage instances. Educate developers and system administrators about the risks of processing untrusted EXR images and enforce secure coding and handling practices.
Description
Buffer Overflow vulnerability in open source FreeImage v.3.19.0 [r1909] allows a local attacker to execute arbitrary code via the Imf_2_2::Xdr::read() function when reading images in EXR format.
