AI-suggested
- Monitor FreeImage project repositories and security advisories for official patches addressing CVE-2024-28578 and apply them promptly once released.
- Until patches are available, restrict local access to systems running vulnerable FreeImage versions to trusted users only, minimizing the risk of local exploitation.
- Employ application whitelisting and endpoint protection solutions to detect and block suspicious activities related to image file processing.
- Conduct code audits and testing on software components that integrate FreeImage, especially those handling RAS format images, to identify and mitigate potential exploitation vectors.
- Consider disabling or limiting support for RAS image format processing if not required by the application to reduce the attack surface.
- Implement robust monitoring and logging of local file operations and process behaviors to detect anomalous activities indicative of exploitation attempts.
- Educate system administrators and developers about the risks of local buffer overflow vulnerabilities and the importance of secure coding and input validation practices.
Description
Buffer Overflow vulnerability in open source FreeImage v.3.19.0 [r1909] allows a local attacker to execute arbitrary code via the Load() function when reading images in RAS format.
