What to do
AI-suggested
- Immediate mitigation should focus on isolating affected devices from untrusted networks, especially the internet, to prevent remote exploitation.
- Implement network-level access controls such as firewall rules to restrict access to the router's management interface (prog.cgi) only to trusted internal IP addresses.
- Monitor network traffic for unusual or suspicious requests targeting the ChgSambaUserSettings function or the prog.cgi endpoint.
- If possible, disable Samba user settings management via the router's web interface until a patch is available.
- Regularly check for firmware updates from D-Link and apply official patches as soon as they are released.
- Consider replacing vulnerable devices with models that have active security support if patches are not forthcoming.
- Employ network segmentation to limit the impact of a compromised router on critical systems.
- Use intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS) with signatures or heuristics to detect exploitation attempts targeting this vulnerability.
- Educate network administrators about this vulnerability and the importance of securing router management interfaces.
Description
D-Link DIR-822+ V1.0.5 was found to contain a command injection in ChgSambaUserSettings function of prog.cgi, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via shell.
