Technical Analysis

The Tutor LMS – eLearning and online course solution plugin for WordPress contains a missing authorization (CWE-862) vulnerability in the hide_notices function in all versions up to and including 2.6.2. This flaw allows unauthenticated attackers to bypass capability checks and enable user registration on WordPress sites that have this feature disabled, potentially altering site configuration without permission. The vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 6.5, indicating a medium level of severity with network attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges required, and no user interaction needed.

Potential Impact

An attacker can enable user registration on affected WordPress sites without authentication, potentially allowing unauthorized users to create accounts. This could lead to further unauthorized actions depending on site configuration and user roles assigned upon registration. The confidentiality and integrity of site settings are impacted, but availability is not affected.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, site administrators should monitor plugin updates from themeum and consider restricting access to plugin management interfaces. No official fix or temporary workaround is currently documented.
