What to do
AI-suggested
A fix has been implemented in the Linux kernel by adding an owner module pointer to the fpga_manager struct and updating the registration interface accordingly. Users should apply the official kernel updates that include this fix. Since this is a kernel vulnerability, upgrading to the patched kernel version is the recommended remediation. No additional mitigations are indicated by the vendor advisory.
Description
CVE-2024-37021 is a medium severity vulnerability in the Linux kernel's FPGA manager subsystem. The issue arises from the assumption that the parent device of the FPGA manager always has a driver with a valid owner pointer. This can lead to a null pointer dereference if the parent device lacks a driver. The vulnerability has been addressed by adding an explicit owner module pointer to the fpga_manager structure and updating the registration functions to use this pointer, preventing null dereferences and improving module reference counting.
