A patch is available and has been incorporated in Linux kernel versions 6.8.0 and later, including various Ubuntu kernel releases. Users should upgrade to these fixed versions to remediate the issue. No additional mitigation steps are required beyond applying the official kernel updates.
Description
CVE-2024-38594 is a vulnerability in the Linux kernel's stmmac network driver where the EST lock was embedded inside the EST structure. Reinitializing the EST structure reset the mutex lock, causing warnings and potential instability. The fix moves the EST lock to the stmmac_priv structure and ensures proper mutex reacquisition during initialization. This issue affects multiple Linux kernel versions prior to 6.8.0 and specific older versions. The vulnerability has been addressed in Linux kernel versions 6.8.0 and later.
