AI-suggested
A patch fixing this issue is available and included in multiple Linux kernel releases (e.g., 4.4.0-1139.145, 4.15.0-1184.199~14.04.1, and others). Users should update their Linux kernel to one of the fixed versions provided by their distribution. After updating, a system reboot is required to apply the fix. Due to ABI changes, third-party kernel modules may need recompilation and reinstallation. No additional mitigations are indicated by the vendor advisory.
Description
A use of uninitialized values in the Linux kernel's 9P client RPC code was fixed. The issue occurs when p9_check_errors() fails early in p9_client_rpc(), leaving certain fields such as 'tag' uninitialized but still used in tracing functions. This flaw was detected by KMSAN and could cause kernel instability. The vulnerability affects multiple Linux kernel versions and has been addressed in several patched releases.
