A patch is available and has been released in multiple fixed Linux kernel versions, including 5.4.0-1132.142~18.04.1 and later. Users and administrators should update their Linux kernel to one of the fixed versions to remediate this vulnerability. No additional mitigation actions are required beyond applying the official kernel updates.
Description
CVE-2024-39469 is a vulnerability in the Linux kernel's NILFS2 file system implementation. The function nilfs_empty_dir() incorrectly handles I/O errors when reading directory folios/pages, leading to false determination of an empty directory and potential file system corruption. Additionally, the function may enter a long loop on I/O errors if the directory inode size is corrupted, causing the log writer thread to hang. This issue has been fixed by making nilfs_empty_dir() return immediately on failure to read a directory folio/page.
