A fix is available and has been released in multiple Linux kernel versions including 5.15.0-1080.87~20.04.1 and later. Users should update to these fixed kernel versions to remediate the issue. No additional mitigation steps are required beyond applying the official patches.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's drm/shmem-helper subsystem allows a local user to trigger a kernel panic by invoking mmap with PROT_WRITE and MAP_PRIVATE flags due to a missing check for copy-on-write (COW) mappings. This flaw causes a BUG_ON condition in the kernel, leading to denial of service. The issue affects multiple drm drivers using default shmem helpers. Fixed versions have been released to address this problem.
