What to do

AI-suggested

A fix has been implemented in the Linux kernel to return an error early when a copy-on-write mapping is detected, preventing the kernel panic. Users should apply the official kernel updates that include this fix. No additional mitigations are specified or required beyond applying the patch.

Description

A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's drm/shmem-helper subsystem allows a local user with write permissions to a file descriptor to trigger a kernel panic. This occurs due to a missing check for copy-on-write (COW) mappings in drm_gem_shmem_mmap, which leads to a BUG_ON condition when mmap is called with PROT_WRITE and MAP_PRIVATE flags. The issue affects all DRM drivers using the default shmem helpers.
