What to do
AI-suggested
- Immediate update to Factorio version 1.1.101 or later once available, as this will contain patches addressing the vulnerability.
- If you cannot patch yet, avoid connecting to untrusted or unknown Factorio multiplayer servers.
- Network-level controls such as firewall rules can restrict outbound connections to known safe Factorio servers.
- Educate users about the risks of connecting to unofficial servers and encourage verification of server authenticity.
- Monitor network traffic for unusual connections to Factorio servers and investigate any suspicious activity.
- Consider running Factorio clients in sandboxed or virtualized environments to limit potential damage from exploitation.
- Developers and server operators should audit Lua scripts and custom maps for suspicious code and implement validation controls to detect malicious payloads.
- Employ endpoint detection and response (EDR) tools to identify and respond to anomalous behavior indicative of exploitation attempts.
Description
Factorio before 1.1.101 allows a crafted server to execute arbitrary code on clients via a custom map that leverages the ability of certain Lua base module functions to execute bytecode and generate fake objects.
