A patch is available and has been applied in multiple Linux kernel releases including 4.4.0-1139.145, 4.15.0-1184.199~14.04.1, and others. Users should update to these fixed kernel versions to resolve the deadlock issue. No additional mitigation is required beyond applying the official kernel updates.
Description
CVE-2024-40912 is a deadlock vulnerability in the Linux kernel's mac80211 Wi-Fi subsystem. The issue arises in the ieee80211_sta_ps_deliver_wakeup() function due to improper locking that allows a softirq to deadlock on the same CPU. This can cause system stalls and denial of service. The problem is fixed by using spin_lock_bh() to prevent softirq execution on the CPU holding the lock. Multiple Linux kernel versions prior to the fixed releases are affected.
