A patch is available and should be applied to affected Linux kernel versions. The fix ensures that fallocate and hole punching operations wait for all direct I/O operations to complete, preventing the race condition. Systems running affected kernel versions should upgrade to the fixed releases listed in the established facts. No additional mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor advisory.
Description
CVE-2024-40943 is a race condition vulnerability in the ocfs2 filesystem implementation in the Linux kernel. It involves a race between hole punching operations (fallocate) and asynchronous/direct I/O (AIO+DIO), which can lead to on-disk corruption and filesystem errors. The issue arises because extents removed by hole punching may still be referenced by concurrent I/O operations, causing errors and potentially making the filesystem read-only. This vulnerability affects multiple Linux kernel versions and has been fixed by ensuring fallocate waits for all direct I/O operations to complete before proceeding.
