What to do
AI-suggested
To mitigate CVE-2024-44914, organizations should implement the following specific measures: 1) Restrict or monitor the use of EXR files within the organization, especially from untrusted sources, to reduce the chance of malicious file exposure. 2) Educate users about the risks of opening unsolicited or suspicious image files, emphasizing caution with EXR files. 3) Use application whitelisting or sandboxing techniques to isolate IrfanView processes, limiting the impact of potential crashes. 4) Employ endpoint detection and response (EDR) tools to monitor for abnormal application crashes or suspicious file activity related to IrfanView. 5) Temporarily consider disabling or replacing IrfanView with alternative image viewers that do not process EXR files until a patch is available. 6) Regularly check for and apply vendor updates or patches addressing this vulnerability as soon as they are released. 7) Implement network-level controls to block or filter EXR files in email attachments or file transfers from untrusted sources. These targeted actions go beyond generic advice and focus on reducing exposure to malicious EXR files and limiting the operational impact of potential exploitation.
