A patch is available and has been released in various Linux kernel versions starting from 5.4.0-1135.145~18.04.1 and others. Users and administrators should update to these fixed kernel versions to remediate the issue. Since no current gadget drivers are known to be affected, no additional mitigation is required beyond applying the official kernel updates.
Description
CVE-2024-44960 is a vulnerability in the Linux kernel's USB gadget core subsystem where a null pointer panic can occur if a USB gadget descriptor is unset before accessing the maxpacket field. This issue arises when the gadget does not properly set up the endpoint for the current speed or if the gadget descriptors are malformed. No known gadget drivers currently exhibit this problem, but it could cause development issues for new gadgets. The vulnerability has been fixed in multiple Linux kernel versions starting from 5.4.0-1135.145~18.04.1 and others.
